Where I read about those guys in debth, I can't remember. I think it
was in David Lavender's _Fist in the Wilderness_, which I had on
ILL, and can't look in now. They show up often in the north of the
border fur trade literature, which goes back into the 1600's .DeVoto
mentions the elder of the brothers visiting the Mandans in 1738-39
in _Across the Wide Mo._ And Chittenden makes the same report but 
adds that De la Verendrye was on "his uncertain course toward the 
Western Ocean" at that time. Neither one of then gives any footnotes.
Sorry I can't be of more help. You need to get into the Canadian 
literature, where they're more of a benchmark than here.
