Mr Landry, and all,
When I was at the Musuem of the Fur trade last year, I picked up a
copy of a little brochure by John Lawrence entitled:
John Colter - Journey of Discovery, wherin the quote in question
appears, with a footnote to Breckenridge. I haven't read
Breckenridge. When I was thinking about "packs" and Colter, I dug
out the brochure, and used the quote, much to my embarassment. I am
sorry to all. When I saw Todd Glover's reaction to it, I realized
that somewhere in my fuzzy mind, I am aware that the Hawken brothers
hadn't gotten going until after Colter's time. My mistake. Sorry.
And thank you both.
